As County Extension Director and Field Crops Agent for Pender County, I receive numerous calls every year from people who recently purchased land, who are looking for ideas and information about how to get started farming or homesteading in Pender County.

The opportunities for people to do this in Pender County are many as are the challenges. Pender County’s weather and growing season vary significantly from year to year. We can have very warm, dry winters and wet summers or extremely wet winters and extremely dry summers and everything in between. We have hurricanes and an occasional ice storm or winter snow and late spring freeze events or insect invasions and high disease pressures due to high heat and humidity that can last the entire summer. All of these conditions affect crop production, animal health, and pasture growth and ultimately whether your venture is profitable or not.

With all of these challenges, there are still a lot of possibilities and opportunities for you to pursue. Especially with our proximity to the large population centers in New Hanover and Onslow County right next door.

As we go into the winter months it is a good time to do your research to find a new crop or livestock option to start with or to add to your operation. To assist in that effort I want to provide you with a list of websites from NC State University and other agencies I recommend to help you find the information you need.
