September Garden by the Month Ornamentals

Trees and Shrubs
  • Topping (severe pruning) is harmful to trees. If you are concerned high winds may cause a large tree to damage your home, have it removed rather than topped, and replace it with a smaller maturing species.
  • Leaf spot diseases are common on trees and shrubs in fall but rarely need to be treated. One exception is entomosporium leaf spot on Indian Hawthorn.
  • Fall is typically our driest season. Remember to water trees and shrubs that have been planted less than one year.

Flowers
  • Plant pansies and other winter annuals from mid-September through mid October to get established before frost.
  • If hurricanes have toppled tall perennials, cut them back by half their height.
