October Garden by the Month Ornamentals

Trees and Shrubs
  • Fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs in our area! When selecting plants, keep in mind their mature size. Match plants to site conditions focusing on drainage, sun exposure, and available space.
  • Fall is not the time to prune other than to remove dead, diseased, or broken limbs.

Flowers
  • Spring flowering perennials can be divided and transplanted in fall. Be sure to do this during the coolest part of the day and water the plants thoroughly after transplanting.
  • Cut back perennials after frost. You may want to leave coneflowers and ornamental grasses to provide seed for birds through winter.
  • Put out plant markers before perennials die back, so you’ll know where not to step or dig during the coming winter.
