October Garden by the Month Edibles

Vegetables and Herbs
  • Sow onion seed or sets and plant garlic bulbs in the garden this month. Bulbs will be ready for harvest next spring. Choose short day onion varieties and soft neck garlic varieties.
  • Harvest any lingering warm season crops before frost.
  • Dig sweet potatoes before frost. Allow them to cure for two weeks in a shady, humid location; then store, in a dry, cool, frost free location.
  • Plant clover in empty areas to prevent erosion and add nutrients to the soil. Till under in early spring just as blooms start to appear.

Fruits
  • Wait until after frost to harvest persimmons as they will be much sweeter and less astringent.
  • Irrigate strawberries enough to keep the top 6-8” of soil moist. This will ensure fruit buds are forming for next season’s crop. It’s also time to fertilize strawberries.
