July Garden by the Month Lawns

  • Fertilize bermudagrass and St. Augustine lawns at a rate of 1 lb. nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft., equal to 6 lbs. of 16-4-8 per 1,000 sq. ft.
  • Lawns need 1” of water each week. If it does not rain, you will need to water by applying 1/3” every 3 days in sandy soils.
  • Stunted, thin areas of turf may be infested with nematodes. Testing for nematodes costs $3. Contact your local Cooperative Extension office for boxes and forms.
  • Localized dry spots of brown or dying turf often occur where irrigation systems do not sufficiently cover. Check soil in these areas. If it is drier than other parts of the lawn, soak with soapy water or apply a wetting agent.
