- Do not apply “weed and feed” products. These contain both fertilizer and weed killer, but it is too early to fertilize warm season lawns.
- Apply pre-emergent herbicides to control summer grassy weeds like crabgrass and sandspur.
- Apply post emergent herbicides to kill weeds that are already growing. Common winter weeds include henbit, burweed, annual bluegrass and wild garlic.
- Do not water dormant lawns except during extended spells of warm windy weather or if the soil has become powder dry.
- Tune up lawn mowers and sharpen or replace blades.
