February Garden by the Month Edibles

Vegetables and Herbs
  • Start pepper, tomato and eggplant seeds indoors to have transplants ready in April. These crops need direct light and warm temperatures (above 60°).
  • Onion sets can be planted in the garden in February for harvest in June. Be sure to plant short day varieties.
  • Plant seed potatoes in the garden for harvest in late May-early June.
  • Start a salad garden!  Direct sow loose leaf lettuce, arugula, spinach, mesclun mixes, carrots, and radish    in the garden.
  • Direct sow beet, mustard, and turnip seed.
Edibles
  • Before planting fruits, consider your chance of success. The easiest fruits to grow in our area are blueberries, muscadines,  blackberries, figs, pears, and Asian persimmons. Peaches are the most challenging. Cherries and apricots will not grow here.
  • Prune apple, pear, and peach trees. Plums and figs require little annual pruning.
  • Prune blackberry laterals (side branches) so they are 12-14” long. Cut out dead, broken or weak canes.
