Description: The NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, Pender County Speakers Bureau is offering an informative Backyard Composting class to be held Tuesday, June 5th, from 11:00 am to Noon at the Hampstead Library, 75 Library Dr., Hampstead, NC 28443. 
The class, led by Master Gardener Maureen Spataro, will highlight the basics of composting at home.  Compost is an organic material that can be added to the soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste currently make up 20 to 30 percent of what we throw away. Learn to recycle waste into black gold that you can use in your garden.

One-Day Review Class

NC Cooperative Extension offers NC Safe Plates for all those who work in the food service industry. The course helps food establishments meet the NC requirement of having at least one supervisor certified as a food protection manager, per the FDA Food Code 2013. NC Safe Plates is taught through case studies, storytelling, activities, and discussion. This class is interactive and encourages participants to engage with the material.

This course is designed for food employees who are seeking food protection manager certification. Certification is based on passing the ANSI-approved exam from the National Registry for Food Safety Professionals. Certification is accepted throughout the US for 5 years from date of exam, and includes a certificate to be displayed in the workplace as well as a wallet card.

Dates: November 5th
Time: 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. *with one-hour lunch break
Test: November 5th, 3 p.m.

Registration Fee $110
*Cost includes instruction, Safe Plates book & slides, 3 practice exams, and final exam

**Test-Only options are available, cost is $50.

Join other K-8 classroom and nonformal educators as we explore activities in the Project Learning Tree K-8 Curriculum Guide. Every participant will leave the workshop with the PLT K-8 Activity Guide which includes 96 activities correlated to the NC Standard Course of Study and Essential Standards. The PLT activity guides are provided free of charge to participants through support from the NC Forestry Association. CEU renewal credits are available. This workshop qualifies for Criteria I in the EE Certification Program.

Differentiated instruction? Technology connections? Literature links? STEM? The PLT activity guide covers it all!!! The PreK-8 guide is correlated to the Common Core (math and ELA) as well as to the NC Essential Standards (science and social studies). Participants will learn about the materials through direct engagement in the PLT activities throughout the workshop. Please bring a bag lunch and prepare to be outside!
